bili-ruler™ Jaundice Screening Device by Little Sparrows
The bili-ruler™ is an “icterometer”, or a series of yellow swatches of increasing intensity that correlate to ranges of serum bilirubin levels and help determine the severity of jaundice.
Using the bili-ruler™ color that most closely matches the baby’s blanched skin color on the tip of the nose, the user can approximate the baby’s bilirubin level and determine the need for further diagnostic testing and treatment of jaundice. Bili-ruler™ was validated on nearly 800 multi-ethnic babies demonstrating equivalency to hospital devices costing thousands.
Easy to Use Guide

Not a stand-alone diagnostic device. Not a substitute for TSB test. Do not use during or after phototherapy or after transfusion. Do not use on infants with pathological jaundice.
The light indicator in comprised of two different, side-by-side color blocks. One of the blocks always appears brown/tan. The other block appears brown/tan if in full spectrum light (daylight), but becomes dark pink under a limited light spectrum, such as in a room lit solely with fluorescent lighting. This is a phenomenon called "metamerism". (A good explanation of metamerism is found
here.)
In the photo, the user appears to be outside in daylight, so the indicator should, and does, appear to be a uniform brown/tan color. If she always uses the bili-ruler in a room with an outside-facing window, there may be enough full spectrum daylight to make it appear uniformly brown/tan. If the user looks at it in low light conditions there may not be enough light to detect the color difference.
It's important to note that the color of the indicator graphic on the sleeve does not exactly match the bili-ruler. This is due to the packaging printhouse and the inks that are available. What we are trying to show in the graphic is that in ideal lighting the indicator is uniformly colored and in non-ideal lighting it will appear to have two colors.
